Frequently asked questions
- How do I know which trademark class I need?
- Your class depends on what you actually sell, not your industry label. A trademark only protects the specific goods and services you list, so identify your products and services first, then match them to the 45 classes. The list above maps common business types to the classes they usually need.
- Can a business register in more than one trademark class?
- Yes. Many businesses file in two or more classes — a clothing brand, for example, often registers class 25 for garments and class 35 for retail. You pay the IPO a fee for each class (£205 for the first, £60 for each additional), so most brands start with the classes that matter most and add others as they grow.
- How many trademark classes are there in the UK?
- There are 45 classes in total. Classes 1–34 cover goods and classes 35–45 cover services. The UK uses the international Nice Classification, the same system used across the EU and most of the world.
