Trademark classes explained

Every trademark is registered in one or more of 45 classes — categories that divide up all goods and services. You pay a fee per class, and your brand is only protected in the classes you choose. Classes 1–34 are goods; 35–45 are services. Pick the ones that match what you sell.

The figure beside each class shows how many marks on the UK register reference it (June 2026).

Frequently asked questions

How many trademark classes are there?
There are 45 classes. Classes 1–34 cover goods and classes 35–45 cover services. The UK uses the international Nice Classification, the same system used across the EU and most of the world.
How do I choose the right trademark class?
Pick the classes that match the goods and services you actually sell, not your industry label. Your trademark only protects what you list, so a clothing brand that also sells online typically files class 25 (clothing) and class 35 (retail). Browse the classes below, or find your classes by business type.
How much does it cost to register a trademark class?
Filing online directly with the UK IPO costs £205 for the first class and £60 for each additional class. So one class is £205, two classes £265, and three classes £325. The fee isn't refunded if your mark is refused.
